Ely City FC made club history at the weekend when both the Mens' and Women's teams achieved top of the league placings after wins.

Baba Camara scored late on to send Ely City top of the league, in a hard fought 2-1 win over Hadleigh on Saturday.

Manager Guy Habbin was again forced to make last minute changes to his side, as Joe Brannan pulled out in the warm up, replaced by Dom Hunt. Louis Jenkins made his anticipated return at right wing-back replacing the injured Alex Kerr.

Early stages of the game saw both sides matching up against one another as midfield battles for possession and keep ball kept any clear cut chances to a minimum.

The deadlock was broken on the half hour, as Ely forced a corner from a great save from Hadleigh’s number one. The resulting corner  was beautifully delivered by Jenkins and Partridge powered in his header from eight yards into the far top corner.

Half time: Ely City 1 - 0 Hadleigh Utd

The second half started a little scrappy, on the hour mark, City could and maybe should have doubled their lead.

And it was a long hopeful punt down field by Hadleigh that gave them the chance to draw level. As the forward chased down and went one on one with Key. The keeper spread himself well, blocking with his feet, but to everyone’s shock the ref signalled for a penalty claiming he caught his man and not the ball.

Hadleigh didn’t argue and the forward dispatched with aplomb sending the unfortunate keepr the other way, to level the score against the run of play.

On 76 minutes, Ely got their deserved goal to put them back in front with a goal from Baba Camara.

Hadleigh tried to find a late opening, but over hit efforts found Hunt sweeping and Key took the sting out as he fielded anything stray in behind.

As the whistle blew, news came from Fakenham that the ‘ghosts’ had lost at home to Woodbridge, leaving the Robins to climb to the top of the tree by a point. This meant for the first time in the clubs history the club had a Men’s and Women’s senior side topping their leagues!

Ely City Women beat Haverhill Town 8-0 in a comprehensive win which cemented history for the club after the weekends results.

The City Women made it six wins from six in the league in a brilliant team performance all round, that saw Poppy Green grab a hat-trick.

Dominating the first half with some excellent football on a tricky pitch, Green opened the scoring early on, then doubling on 10 minutes; before Horsfield, Rebekah Finch, Kel Docwra and Green again added to the score benefiting from good work by Tash Lane.

6-0 at half time, City dominated the second period and although adding only another two to their tally courtesy of Finch’s second and Bella Pillow, Ely produced some dominant game control on and off the ball.

A final score of 8-0 flattered the home side, as City were rampant and always in control.
