Following a week’s break Ely Tigers, head coach, Des Lloyd welcomed several players back into the fold as Tigers played Cantabs at Cambridge Commodities Park.
Tigers were looking to kick-start their season, following two defeats.
It was Tigers that troubled the scoreboard first on 20 minutes, with Matt McCarthy picking up the ball , and finding space to touch down for the first try, with Jake Alsop adding the conversion.
However, from the restart Cantabs win a penalty, opting to kick for the points in front of the post and getting their first points on the ball.
Tigers were playing with intensity, closing down Cantabs at each chance given, and it wasn’t long before Tigers were on the scoreboard once more, as they move the ball out wide to find Paul Dewey.
Alsop was unable to add the conversion and as half-time approached, Mitch Kennett adds another try.
With Ely being stronger in the tackle and pushing Cantabs backwards, Alsop was able to add the conversion, as the game entered added time of the first half, Ely score again with Lee Thompson finishing off a powerful move again, as Tigers prove powerful, with the conversion added.
The second half started like the first finished, with Tigers proving more powerful, and with quick hands, moving the ball from the centre to the wing, where Paul Dewey went over for his second try of the afternoon.
Tigers lead 31-3 and another flowing move from Tigers from their own half saw the next try, as the ball moved through the hands of Rhys Williams Goldham, Adam Tallack and Joel Scott Paul, which saw Scott Paul cross the try line to score.
Alsop adds the conversion, soon after Paul Dewey completed his hat-trick of tries, as he followed up his one kick over the back line to bundle the ball up to score.
Tigers picked up a yellow card as Lee Thompson was sent to the sin-bin, during this time Cantabs scored their first try, as they pushed Ely back, with the added conversion, this was soon followed up by their second try and conversion to make the score 45-17.
As the game came to a close, there was a debut for another one of the club's colts players as Joe Long, came on as a replacement during the second half.
