Ely City Hockey Club finished the season in style with four wins, one draw and one loss.
The Ladies 1s were at home to Pelicans 2 and started their game on fire, scoring three goals within the first 10 minutes.
Pelicans fought back with a goal of their own before two more from Ely. Another two goals from Ely and a third from Pelicans took the score to 6-3 to Ely at half time.
Pelicans came back out more structured and attacking in the second half and despite a number of attempts on goal by each team, it was only until the last 10 minutes, that Ely scored their seventh goal taking the final score to 7-3.
Goal scorers were Ellie John with 3, Rhianne Jones with 3 and Charlotte Nix 1.
Zara Gilbert was player of the match. The Ladies 1s finish the season fifth in the East Women’s Division 3 North West.
The Mens 1s needed to win their game against Cambridge City 3s to avoid any chance of relegation.
A hat-trick from Matt Samouel, also player of the match, two goals from co-captain Reece Laffar and one from Daniel ‘Bambi’ Martell, ensured a 6-2 win. The Mens 1s finish the season eighth in the East Men’s Division 2 North West.
Ely City Ladies 2s, having been promoted at the end of last season have struggled to get the wins this season. They have though fought hard and above all, enjoyed their matches with a huge team spirit.
Their final game was away against Bourne Deeping 1s who stood at third in the league and with a hail storm midway through, they finished with a 0-8 loss. Fiona Bartley was player of the match. The Ladies 2s finish the season, eleventh in the East Women’s Division 3 North West.
The Mens 2s have had a cracking season. Their 5-2 win over Cambridge University 2s on Saturday cemented their position at 2nd in the East Men’s Division 4 North West, just one point behind the leaders and earning promotion. Nick Wells scored a hat trick from 2 shorts and a flick. Further goals were added by Cameron Ludlow and Charley Swan-Taylor in the second half.
Ely City Ladies 3s have also had a really good season. Having been bottom of the league for a number of years, they finished this season at sixth in the East Women’s Division 5 North West. Their game against Newmarket 3s on Saturday was a very evenly fought game and ended in a 0-0 draw.
The Mens 3s have struggled this season but they had a great game away against Spalding 4s on Saturday.
The score at half time was 2-1 to Ely who then came back out very strong taking the final score to an 8-3 win with Ollie Bennett scoring one, Liam Goodson five and Keane Savage two goals. They finish the season at tenth in the East Men’s Division 5 North West.
Promotions and relegations have yet to be confirmed by the East League and will depend on what happens at National League level.
It has though overall been a good season for Ely City Hockey Club with a number of new players joining the club and a great team spirit shown by all.
