Ely Choral Society concert review at St Mary's Church

The concert, held on October 26, featured a range of pieces that highlighted the choir's skill and versatility.

The choir was supported by soprano Elenor Bowers-Jolley, harpist Bonnie Scott, percussionist Derek Scurll, and organist Jeremy Lloyd, as well as the ECS Players, consisting of Joanna Reveley on flute, Jenny Sewell on oboe, Csilla Waterful and Katie Birkwood on 'cello, and Koren Wilmer on clarinet.

The programme included Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein, Trio for Clarinet, 'Cello and Piano by Nino Rota, a group of songs sung by Ely Youth Choir, and Sir John Rutter's Requiem.

The Chichester Psalms, performed in Hebrew, were a notable highlight.

The choir navigated the challenging score with finesse, delivering a dramatic and joyful performance.

A harp solo introduced the second movement, which featured a solo by Noah MacLellanm.

The third movement saw a variety of timbres used to create a sense of cohesion, ending the piece on a peaceful note.

The Trio for Clarinet, 'Cello and Piano was a joyful interlude, with each instrument taking its turn in the spotlight.

The Ely Youth Choir was a standout performer.

Their singing was described as exemplary, with good intonation and expressive phrasing.

Their final piece, Flying Free by Dom Besig, was particularly well received.

The concert concluded with Sir John Rutter's Requiem, which was performed admirably.

The soloist added warmth and expression to the piece, while the instrumentalists played with competence and sensitivity.
