Unsung heroes from across East Cambridgeshire were recognised at a star-studded event in Ely on Friday night.

The 2024 Ely Hero Awards took place at The Maltings when Angels Arribas, of the Ely Oasis Cancer Hub, based in Ely was named as the main winner.

The Hub aims to signpost and connect people and to offer free practical help and provide well-being sessions and a positive place for anyone experiencing cancer.

After receiving her award, Angles said: “In the same way we need oxygen to breathe, we need community.”

His Majesty's Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Cambridgeshire Daniel Schumann presented Angles with her award.

An auction was held in aid of Highfield School PTA which raised £890, with lots including a 1966 World Cup signed photo and film memorabilia donated by local businesses. A raffle bolstered the fundraising total on the night to £1,704.

The winners of the 10 categories were then announced by the sponsors of each category.

The winners of each category were:

  1. The Janet Eisold Smiliest Server - Joann Jobling of Marmalade and Jam
  2. Colleague of the Year - Clare Gatherole
  3. Most Amazing Professional - Sue Smith of Sweet Peas Childminding

The event is sponsored by local businesses, many of whom have supported the event since the first award ceremony in 2017.

The judging panel is made up of local individuals, including past winners.

Each year, the event continues to thrive and grow, rewarding individuals and celebrating the community.

Luke Smith, co-organiser of the event, said: "Each year we are blown away by the support from the community, not only in nominating their heroes but businesses who want to give back.

"This year we received a record number of nominations, which made for a fantastic event coupled with the additional category - Ely Hero Awards is so full of life and energy."
