A new 'sporting memories club' is set to launch for sport-loving residents aged 50 and above in Ely.

The initiative is being brought to the community by Better leisure centres, managed by GLL, a charitable social enterprise.

They are collaborating with Sporting Memories to offer these unique meet-and-greet sessions to local sports enthusiasts.

The aim of these sessions is to provide a platform for people to connect, make friends, and share their love for sport.

Louis Green, a community sport manager at GLL, expressed his enthusiasm about these sessions coming to Ely.

He said: “It’s an ideal activity for those in their fifties and beyond and we’re delighted to bringing these sessions to the area. "

Mr Green also pointed out that these sessions are equally welcoming for those who live alone, locals dealing with dementia, and individuals living with long-term conditions.

The sessions, according to Green, promise to be engaging and stimulating.

He said: “I’m sure there will be some fascinating stories about sport and local history shared and our aim is to make the sessions thought-provoking and stimulating."

A typical session will start with conversations around sports, people's experiences and warm beverages.

This will be followed by a round of boccia and light exercises.

"Our aim is to make each session fun and exciting with quizzes, spot the ball and other interactive activities," Mr Green said.

The club, which is free to join, will host two-hour weekly sessions.

The first of these in Ely will start from September 11 and continue every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring along photos and keepsakes from their sporting past to share and relive their cherished moments.
