A sausage that was left on a resident's porch in Ely is being investigated as a racially or religiously motivated offence.
The victim contacted police to report the incident on August 2 believing the envelope which read "you've been sausaged" was connected to the recent spate of far right protests.
The victim said: "The incident happened when the far right and English Defence League were carrying out nationwide riots against the Muslims and immigrants, especially the visible minorities.
"This could not be a mere coincidence. The time of the attack is important and so we believe this attack is racially and religiously motived.
"We are awaiting the outcome of the police investigation."
In a statement, a police spokesperson said: "An investigation is underway following a report of a racially or religiously aggravated offence which took place on August 2 at about 8.30pm in Merivale Way, Ely. Enquiries are ongoing.
"If anyone has any information, they are asked to call 101 or use our webchat and quote 35/56836/24."
