Littleport and Ely Timebank at village hall on September 21

It remains obstinately in favour of repair and recycling for inanimate objects; and provides respite for its animals and human residents too.

Its town council is taking the now-surplus-to-modern-day-requirements old red telephone box on Ely Road, refurbishing it as an information hub for Littleport’s many visitors, and re-siting it at the entrance to the Main Street free car park.

Littleport also has an active Timebank – sharing exchanges of tasks that need doing without financial transaction – that also supports Cambridgeshire’s Repair Shop network – the Littleport Repair Café offers new life to broken objects at a £5 donation to the pot.

Stephen Cole, Littleport’s Alpaca Lifestyle Farm proprietor and Littleport and Ely Timebank ambassador, saved one couple’s aging sewing machine from the tip expertly renewing it to full usefulness in five minutes. 

The next one is in the village hall on September 21. Timebank’s friendly volunteers meet for a chat, coffee and cake at 10am every Thursday morning at the preserved 19th century shop, now the Adams Heritage Centre, in Main Street.

On the commercial front, Carol and Stuart Palmer run the appropriately named Fenland Spirit Services on Ten Mile Bank, CB6 1EE, servicing and repairing mowers, garden machinery and small construction equipment.

When it comes to older people, there’s the monthly afternoon music club next Thursday (August 15) at the Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

Friendly staff and clientele with good music courtesy of DJ Derek Timbers that is set at just the right number of decibels so you can dance or chat through it and be comfortably heard, with low, not flashing, light.

From 2-4pm its only £2 on the door and everybody’s welcome.

And this Saturday night (August 10) at the historic Crown Inn on Main Street it’s super entertainer, back by popular demand, Cecil, singing soul and Motown from 9pm.
