More than £3,700 has been raised in two days after an East Cambridgeshire recreation ground was damaged by travellers.

Arriving in several caravans, members of the traveller community settled at Witchford recreation ground on Friday July 26.

Over the weekend, local residents said that damage was caused by vandalism to the field and play area.

This resulted in a JustGiving page being launched with a fundraising target of £5,000 to help clean up the mess.

So far, more than 130 people have donated, with £3,510 raised.

Gemma Hewett, who set up the page, said: "Damage has been caused, concern spread across the village for their safety, and a hefty bill for the removal of said visitors.

"The cost of this will be in the thousands," she added.

"So please help keep our social club, recreation ground, play park and and village safe, by contributing what you can.

"Every donation, however big or small, is very much appreciated.

"Witchford is a wonderful little village and the community have truly come together to keep it safe."

A Cambridgeshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We are aware of the presence of travellers at Witchford recreation ground and I understand they are due to leave today (Monday July 29)."

An East Cambridgeshire District Council spokesperson said: "We were aware of the travellers settling in Witchford and liaised with the local parish council to support them as they took steps to move the travellers on from the grounds.

"It is our understanding that the travellers moved yesterday."

However Witchford Sports and Social Club disputes the appropriate level of support was offered to them over the weekend.
