Members at Ely Methodist Church were delighted to welcome the mayor of Ely, Cllr Chris Phillips to present their Bronze Eco Award from A Rocha UK.

An act of worship with prayers and hymns reflecting concern for the environment was led by the minister Rev Catherine Dixon.

Rev Bernard Arnold then introduced the idea of toilet twinning whereby groups commit to raise funds to provide toilets in communities round the world.

The mayor responded by encouraging those present in their concern for the environment and presented the award to Rev Robert Ely chair of the Eco Group at Church.

A vegetarian salad supper was served followed by coffee and cake – the celebration cake having been cut by the mayoress Mary Rone.

Members of the church are now looking at further ways to care for the environment, locally and globally, as they work towards the silver award.

A Rocha UK (www.arocha.co.uk) is a Christian charity working to protect and restore the natural world and committed to equipping Christians and churches in the UK to care for the environment. More information about toilet twinning can be found at toilettwinning.org
