Charlotte Cane has claimed the public are "very angry" with the Conservative Party as she celebrates a resounding election victory.

Ms Cane was declared MP for Ely and East Cambridgeshire earlier this morning, beating former culture secretary Lucy Frazer who has held the seat since 2015.

Keir Starmer's Labour Party has handed a brutal defeat to the Conservative Party which is on course to suffer its worst election result in more than 100 years.

Speaking to the Ely Standard, Cane said she was "delighted" that people had voted "in such large numbers" for the Liberal Democrats.

She said: "We've been strong in the area for some time, we have a lot of district and county councillors who have worked hard for the community.

"Also, frankly, people are very angry with the Conservative Party."

Ms Cane joins 70 Lib Dem MPs to be elected so far in what has been a historic night for the party under Sir Ed Davey's leadership.

She said: "One of my immediate priorities is to talk with people who manage social house to try and properly understand why we can't move people into empty houses and why we can't get the houses up to a good standard.

"I'd also like to see that there are enough dentists in the constituency for people to register with an NHS dentist and get the treatment that they need without having to go private."

She added that the Conservatives "have a lot of work to do" to prove that the party can govern again.

"A lot of people I spoke to who used to vote Tory were horrified by how prime minister Johnson demeaned his office and were shocked by the budget Liz Truss produced.

"The fact that more vulnerable members of our society have been left to fend for themselves just shows that they've still got a long way to go as a party."
