Thousands of people attended Burwell Carnival at the weekend, with organisers calling the 2024 edition "a fantastic event".

After a dog show and silent disco at the recreation ground on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon saw 20 different community groups take part in the annual carnival parade.

With this year's theme being 'transport', the adult winners were Burwell Print with their Viking long boat.

The children's winners were, from first to third place, 1st Burwell Brownies with penny farthings, 2nd Burwell Early Learners with trains, Spring montessori with hot air balloons.

The carnival queen was Niia Bentley-James and the carnival king was Archie Carriage, who was also celebrating his sixth birthday.

The fun continued with live music running until 10.30am thanks to performances from bands including The Riffugees, Burwell Folk Club, Mister E, The High Rollers and Diggin' for Diamonds.

Burwell Scouts ran a busy bar, too, and stallholders included local cadets, girl guides, Burwell Parish Council, Wicken Fen Nature Reserve as well as a range of food and drink traders.

Katherine Hyatt, chair of carnival committee, said: "The whole event went really well. It was busy with lots of people and we were lucky with the weather on parade day, because it was hot and sunny.

"We had a fantastic day and are looking forward to working out how much we can give back to the local community."

She added that the volunteer-run committee holds fundraising events all year round to cover the costs of the carnival.

"We gave out over £6,000 to community groups last year and we hope to be able to match that or improve it," she said, adding that the donations will be given out around Christmas time.
