A wreath-laying service was held at Ely’s War Memorial to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
The city branch of the Royal British Legion, together with the City of Ely Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council and other representatives of the armed forces, gathered for the poignant occasion.
The Reverend Alan Jesson, Honorary Padre to the Cambridgeshire County and Ely Branch of the RBL, gave the service and welcome.
The welcome was followed by the ‘Act of Remembrance’ Exhortation, read by vice chair of the Ely RBL branch, Neil Grimstone.
Laurine Green, of City of Ely Military Band, gave the Last Post and Reveille, following a two-minute silence.
Wreaths were laid in memorial by the City of Ely Mayor, Cllr Chris Phillips, ECDC chair and vice chair of the City of Ely RBL.
The service concluded with thanks, blessings and the National Anthem sang by a choir and the community.
Ely continued commemorations by lighting the beacon on St Mary’s Green that evening, and a further short service took place.
