An Ely primary school has launched a reading festival to raise funds for a new library project.
Ely St John’s Community Primary School will be hosting the event on April 20 in a bid to raise £15,000 for the library space.
So far, the school has raised £8,200 for the project.
The fun-filled afternoon will feature a range of literary-themed delights, including storytelling sessions, book-related activities, and a display of Scholastic books for sale.
Performance poet David Bowden from Word Guerilla will be headlining the event and offering two shows for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils.
The money raised will go towards purchasing new books, furniture, displays and lighting to create a welcoming space for pupils of all ages.
Sharon Turner, English lead at Ely St John’s Primary School said: “I am so excited for our library project.
"As English lead, and a class teacher, I know the importance of having up to date book titles and a wealth of genres for the children to explore.
“This build will mean we can timetable classes to visit the library area, where reading for pleasure can be encouraged and nurtured."
John Henson, head teacher added: “Nurturing a love of books and reading is central to the ethos of Ely St. John's and our reading curriculum is designed to motivate, engage and inspire our students.
"We are really excited to be holding our first 'Bookfest' event to share this passion with the wider school community and raise funds for our new library project."
While the event is free to attend, tickets for Word Guerilla cost £1 per person, and attendees are encouraged to donate.
Tickets can be purchased on the Friends of Ely St John’s website.
