Cambridgeshire food reviewer Lucy Melton shares her thoughts on Urban Fresh in Ely.
I have visited Urban Fresh in Ely a few times now and I have always enjoyed the food I had.
I first went back in 2022 for a birthday celebration. It was a nice sunny day in August, so it was a perfect place to go as this restaurant is down at the riverside with beautiful views.
I have since visited for a Christmas meal and for brunch. The menu is South American food and offers an array of different flavours that you don’t get from any other restaurant around.
I will start with the first meal I had there, an evening meal. I had the paella mixta with king prawns, monkfish, chicken and chorizo. It was packed with all of these which was great - good portion sizes, large chunks of fish/meat and it all tasted so good.
On the side I shared patatas bravas, chimichurri halloumi and padron peppers – they were all flavoursome; especially the halloumi as they were good big pieces.
I had my eye on moqueca (seafood stew) as it looked incredible, and I would love to go back and try it.
For dessert I had the chocolate ganache served with strawberries and ice-cream which was great, a rich chocolate flavour perfectly paired with the strawberries.
When I went back to try out the brunch menu I was really impressed. They had a good selection of different options - not just your normal brunch dishes, they all had a South American theme to them.
I had the pork belly breakfast tortilla, it had a little kick to it but that was nice, and the guacamole helped me handle the heat.
The red berry smoothie was refreshing and full of flavour, but it was difficult to drink with the small straw.
My friends' pancakes with summer fruits and yoghurt were good but nothing wow which is a shame.
This place is pricier than most in Ely, however I think it is definitely worth the money and is a great choice for a special occasion, especially in the summer so you can sit outside down by the river.
