The MP for South East Cambridgeshire appeared on Good Morning Britain this morning after UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman said that fearing discrimination for being gay or a woman should not be enough to qualify for international refugee protection.
Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer MP spoke on the ITV show in relation to the comments, which have since been slammed by popstar Elton John as "legitimising hate and violence".
Talking to hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley, Ms Frazer said: "Suella Braverman makes a point about the importance of taking people in when they're suffering.
"Of course, we must give a sanctuary - it's really important. But there's a difference between that and fear of discrimination.
"We need to make sure the people being persecuted can come over here and that there is sufficient space across the world."
After referencing United Nations figures which showed that 108 million people will have been displaced by 2022, she added: "What these figures show is that there is an international problem.
"We need to make sure that people come here legally and safely rather than through uncontrolled routes.
"And we need to make sure that those people get a home.
"We don't need to take people from countries that are already safe, and we can't give sanctuary to the wrong people."
