A familiar face of the ‘Toy Shop’ in Ely for the last 23 years, Andrew Olley of City Cycle Centre was crowned the Smiliest Server at this year’s Ely Hero Awards.
“Andrew just loves his job,” said the judges, adding that “he is passionate about helping people and always cheery,” said the judges.
“His knowledge and customer service shine through, from making age-appropriate gift suggestions to the exciting competitions he runs, featuring giraffes and orangutangs, gaining customers as far as America.”
The judges added: “Andrew also helps fundraisers for local causes, organises a Christmas Club and goes the extra mile when toys are out of stock.
“Adored by children and adults alike, Andrew’s humility makes him a firm favourite with his customers.”
After winning, Andrew said: "I've won it because I'm smiley, I suppose, and because the City Cycle Centre is such a fantastic shop really.
"All the other staff are very good, too, and would back me up.
"That's the truth - it's an award for them, really."
He added that he didn't have any expectations coming into the awards ceremony.
"It was just a very nice night and a really great thing to celebrate Ely in this way."
The other finalists in this category were Jade Dace of Burwell Co-op, and Phil Hyland and Rachael Tate of Prosper Cafe.
The judges said of all the finalists in the category: “Who doesn’t love a Smiley Server and there is a plethora of exceptional servers in and around Ely welcoming us into the many shops and cafes.
"We always love this category because we get to meet individuals who shine positivity, leave a lasting impression, meet our expectations in a retail environment all with the added bonus of us getting to drink some fantastic coffee.
"Excellent customer service should be rewarded and, after all, it is the foundation of any good business.”
The award was sponsored by Poets House.
