MP Lucy Frazer met with members of Littleport town and parish councils to explore ways of improving youth provision across the area.
The MP for South East Cambridgeshire, who is the candidate for the new seat of Ely and East Cambridgeshire at the next General Election, visited Littleport Youth and Community Centre on Friday, August 4.
She spoke to council representatives about their work to engage the youth in the area, principally through ThePORT Youth Group.
The group caters for approximately 150 young people between the ages of 10 and 17, with multiple sessions on offer during the week.
There are also various holiday activities, as well as trips and community events throughout the year. This includes voluntary work, such as fundraising for the foodbank, conducting litter picks and supporting care homes.
The new centre was built using grants from East Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgshire County Council.
The town council has applied for a series of grants since the building has been opened to provide an interactive sports wall, a youth cafe, and a well-being hub.
They also discussed ideas for expanding provision to more young people who are currently short of access to services.
Commenting on the visit, Ms Frazer said: "It is vital that young people in our local communities are able to develop healthy relationships and participate in activities that make use of their talents.
"That is why I have been so encouraged to see the work of staff and local councillors at Littleport Youth and Community Centre to make this happen. They make a real difference to this community.
Chair of Littleport Town Council, Clive Webber said: “Littleport Town Council were delighted that Lucy Frazer accepted the invitation to view our new youth and community centre, and discuss the development of our well-being team.
“The meeting gave our council representatives the opportunity to explain the positive impact these projects are having on our community, as well as our drive to further improve local facilities for our residents, and the new projects we have in progress."
