Burwell Surgery on Newmarket Road has been revealed as the best GP surgery across East Cambridgeshire in terms of overall patient satisfaction, measuring 90 per cent.

This comes following an NHS England's annual GP Patient Survey for 2023, which highlighted whether patients were happy with their surgeries after completing a questionnaire.

The patients were asked to rate their experiences of using the doctor’s surgery based on a range of categories including experience of ease of getting through the phone, making an appointment, reception staff, how often they see or speak to their preferred doctor, satisfaction of opening times, how easy is it to use the surgery website and overall satisfaction with the practice.

The national approval rating across England for 2023 marked a fall from 72 per cent last year and the lowest score since the GP Patients Survey began in 2017.

Burwell Surgery topped the list with a 90 per cent. It also measured 99 per cent for helpful reception staff and 87 per cent for ease of making an appointment.

Apart from this, Bottisham Medical Practice measured 88.23 percent and St George’s Medical Centre in Littleport measured 86.5 per cent for overall satisfaction, followed by Cathedral Medical Centre with 82.9 per cent, although it measured an impressive 95.8 per cent for helpful reception staff.

The Staploe Medical Centre in Soham came fifth (79.1 per cent), followed by Haddenham Surgery (76.8 per cent) and then St Mary’s Surgery (73.7 per cent).

Out of the 10 GP surgeries in the region, seven measured for overall patient satisfaction experience in and around Ely, an impressive seven surgeries performed above national average.

Waterbeach Surgery measured the lowest across the region, with just 39.3 per cent for overall satisfaction. It received a measure of just over six per cent for patients seeing or speaking to their preferred GP.

Cottenham Medical Practice performed slightly better than Waterbeach finishing second worst in the region with a below-average rating of just over 50 per cent.

Priors Field Surgery in Sutton also came in the bottom half of the spectrum with 48.72 per cent. It got 17.75 per cent in the category of how often patients see or speak to their preferred GP and 31 per cent on the ease of getting through the phone.

All the surgeries were also measured in the category of 'how confident were you with your healthcare professional your last appointment' - nine out of the 10 surgeries mentioned above measured 90 per cent and above except Waterbeach Surgery which measured 81.8 per cent.

NHS England highlighted though that only a handful of patients completed the survey at some practices, so the figures may not reflect an entirely accurate picture of each surgery's performance.
