Lucy Frazer has been appointed as the new culture secretary in a mini government reshuffle. 

Ms Frazer, MP for South East Cambridgeshire, was chosen to lead the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) by prime minister Rishi Sunak on February 7. 

The move is part of a shake-up to four government departments by Mr Sunak to try and improve economic growth and tackle the energy crisis. 

A statement on the government’s website reads: “The prime minister, with the approval of His Majesty The King, has created four new departments. 

“The changes will ensure the right skills and teams are focussed on the Prime Minister’s five promises: to halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, cut waiting lists and stop the boats.” 

Ms Frazer’s latest role, where she will take over from Michelle Donelan, is her third in the last five months.

The government aim to refocus the DCMS in order to “recognise the importance of these industries to our economy and build on the UK’s position as a global leader in the creative arts.” 

Other departments that have been restructured are: Energy Security and Net Zero; Science, Innovation and Technology, as well as Business and Trade. 

In September last year, she was named as a minister of state in the Department for Transport. 

And a month later, Ms Frazer was appointed to a ministerial role in the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC). 

At the time of her previous appointment, Ms Frazer tweeted: “Delighted to have been asked by Rishi Sunak to join the LUHC team. 

“I am very much looking forward to working with Michael Gove, the ministerial team and civil servants.” 

In 2021, Ms Frazer took on the post of Solicitor General for a second time, replacing current Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
