It might have been described as ‘rising out of mud and mire’ by academic and author Doreen Wallace in her book ‘East Anglia’.
But Littleport has always embodied the transcendent spirit of caring for others.
From offering shelter to a king of England a thousand years ago, to providing funds to charities, to cooking a Christmas dinner for a neighbour, Littleport people have resolutely stepped up to the mark.
Last weekend’s joint fundraiser by the Crown Inn and the Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club raised more than £3,000 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, and a jolly good time was had by all.
4D Dance, Littleport Carol Singers and Millfield Primary School were just some of the many people and groups that made the event such a success.
Also, last weekend, charity in the form of freely given time and effort, benefitted the Littleport Players, when the hugely well-received Christmas panto used props and scenery made by Littleport Scouts and Guides.
And a few days ago, their scout leader Julie Double, who as a private individual organises a cook an extra Christmas dinner for someone near you who wouldn’t otherwise have one, every year, put a call-out on Littleport Community Group Facebook page.
And as soon as the list opened for this 4th Christmas Day meal, the good-hearted women of Littleport hastened to sign up for it to be matched with a recipient. To volunteer Facebook: Littleport’s Christmas Dinner Deliveries.
The Scouts, Guides, Brownies and Cubs also deliver many of the voluntarily produced Littleport Life community magazines round the village.
And two of them have included that as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award along with other endeavours.
This includes serving refreshments as members of ThePORT youth club from the kitchen at the successful Littleport Village Hall Christmas sale event that organiser of the club, and town council community youth worker, Joanne Coe, put on last Saturday.
On Friday, December 9, the Crown Inn presents super-talented live musician and singer Bondy from 8.30pm.
This Saturday, December 10, it’s a free club night at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club with football on the big screen at 6pm.
