500 young local singers are to perform with the Gabrieli Roar choir in a "transformational” experience in Ely Cathedral this Christmas
Gabrieli Roar is in Ely for a festive concert in Ely Cathedral with 13 school and youth choirs from the city and surrounding areas performing alongside the Gabrieli Consort and Players, a leading UK period music ensemble.
The group, Gabrieli Roar, helps young people from many backgrounds develop a love of choral music by breaking down barriers and fostering the next generation of classical music lovers, concert-goers and musicians.
The programme is a collaboration between Gabrieli and many English school and youth choirs, which helps young people from many backgrounds to develop a love of choral music, breaking down barriers and fostering the next generation of classical music lovers, concert-goers and musicians.
The concert forms part of the 'In Dulci Jubilo’ project, Gabrieli Roar’s most ambitious yet.
Over 85 school and youth choirs and over 3000 young singers from around the UK performing in places such as Westminster, Portsmouth, Peterborough and Ely from November to January.
The concerts involve hundreds of young singers aged 9-18 and some even have as many as 1100 performers.
The concert are based around the music of Michael Praetorius, including his Christmas music, featuring huge ensembles of late renaissance and early baroque instruments.
Paul McCreesh, Gabrieli Roar founder and artistic director, said “We are passionate about extending musical opportunities to young people, particularly from areas where access to classical music is limited.
“Our young singers talk excitedly about the joy of taking part in Roar and the performances are absolutely thrilling to witness, as young people experience the joy of performing great music, often for the first time, alongside some of the country’s finest professional musicians.”
The local choirs involved in the concert at Ely Cathedral are Hertfordshire County Youth Choir, The Perse Middle School Voices and members of Chamber Choir, Chesterton Singers, Thomas Mills High School Senior and High School Chamber Choirs, St. Augustine's Catholic Primary School Choir, Chelmsford Cathedral, Malcolm Arnold Academy, Lodge Park Academy, New Hall School, Bobby Moore Academy and Griffin Children's Chorus from Riverley Primary, Willow Brook Primary and Lammas Voices.
The concert starts at 7.15pm on December 2, 2022.
