Soham Town Rangers boss Lloyd Groves believes the team is playing “the best football the club has seen for a long time” despite their inconsistent form.
The Greens have won just two of their last 10 Eastern Counties Premier Division games, that run extending after a 2-2 draw at home to Brantham Athletic on October 29.
Groves could count his side lucky after a late comeback from two goals down saw Soham score twice in four second half minutes at Julius Martin Lane.
“Saturday’s game was another frustrating 90 minutes, a game we dominated in terms of possession but found ourselves down 2-0 with eight minutes to go,” said Groves.
“We created double figures in terms of chances but only converting two is the story of our season to date.”
After Ollie Ward’s strike, Alfie Connor’s 90th-minute equaliser claimed a point for Soham, who remain winless in their last six outings.
In that time, they have conceded 16 goals and dropped into the league’s bottom half, which has frustrated Groves.
“We set targets at the start of the year and we are way off that,” he said.
“But we must all take responsibility for this year to date and only we can change our fortunes.
“Have we deserved to lose? Some would argue yes with the goals we’ve conceded, but we set up to attack teams and that’s part of playing an expansive brand of football.”
Groves, who is working alongside ex-Ely City joint-manager Ben Farmer, took on the role as manager after joint-boss Matt Clements left the club last month.
Injuries have also plagued a Soham side in need of good fortune, but Groves is confident his team will become a tougher side to beat.
“We’ve found ourselves playing the best football the club has seen for a long time, which I’m proud of,” he said.
“However, this has come without the most important factor and that’s three points regularly and far too often defeats.
“We need to be harder to break down, cut out the mistakes on the ball and convert our chances.”
Soham visit bottom-placed Haverhill Rovers in a league clash this Saturday, 3pm, ahead of a Cambs Invitation Cup tie at home to March Town on November 8, 7.45pm.
