City councillor Peter Harris set himself a target of £5,000 in sponsorship by walking the final 120 kilometres along the Camino, the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain.
For the past 12 years, Peter has supported the Centre for Children’s Happiness (CCH), an orphanage and school in Phnom Penh, Cambodia which provides a home and education for children, orphaned or abused, who would otherwise be living and working on the city’s rubbish dumps.
Back in Ely last week he is in sight of his target. The funds will be used to provide two-year vocational training at a centre run by Don Bosco, a Christian charity where 55 children from CCH have already completed courses in engineering, IT, marketing and construction.
Peter, who came to Ely as founder director of King’s International Study Centre, will be in Asia on business next month.
“Friends have been wonderfully supportive and I am so very grateful to them all, especially in such challenging times. So far I have raised £4,650. I’m hoping that by the time I leave in mid-November I will have reached my target,” he said.
